There are rules and regulations which restrict large, multi-storey hotels from being built, but waste management and recycling programmes don’t generally conform with those viewed as standard is western European countries.

About The Green Fox Recycling Project

If you’ve visited Skiathos over the past few years, you may have noticed some green-coloured netted containers placed around the island. These are owned and managed by The Green Fox Project – a community-backed initiative which collects and recycles PET plastic bottles and aluminium cans. It’s already made a huge difference, sending 80,000 tons of recycleable material to the mainland to be processed (which would otherwise occupy the on-island landfill area).

Recently, The Green Fox Project’s vehicle broke down beyond repair. Unfortunately, this has severely limited the group’s capacity to collect and recycle waste on the island, so they’re asking for help from people who love Skiathos by making a one-off donation.

The first in a series of posts on places to drink explores some of the best of the British-owned bars on the island. There are a number of such places located in Skiathos Town, all very different from each other in terms of atmosphere, and the clientele they attract. Featured here is The Old Port House, located in Skiathos Town on one of the attractive narrow cobbled streets at the back of the Old Port.

The Old Port House is owned and operated by Brian and Denise who originate from Leeds, Yorkshire. They are well-known hosts among their customers, provide a warm welcome, a cheerful and efficient service, and have a drinks menu that is varied and competitively priced. The widescreen TV provides up-to-the-minute news and sports programming from the UK, while a wide and varied music collection keeps guests entertained throughout the night.

The bar was originally a Greek fisherman’s house that has been converted with meticulous care and imagination. The ceiling to what was originally the upper floor of the house has been mostly removed giving the bar a deceptively airy feel. It’s air-conditioned and has carefully chosen lighting that helps create a warm ambience. The toilets are located up a wooden staircase and, like the bar itself, are immaculate.

The Old Port House has also earned a loyal customer base with visitors returning regularly during their holiday and also, as many do with Skiathos, when they return the following year. The majority of customers are British, and usually of a more mature age who are seeking good service and value in pleasing surroundings.

The finest testimony for The Old Port House is the high number of customers who continually return there. People have many varied ideas of what they want from a bar but, whichever measure is used, many would consider The Old Port House a contender for the title “Best British Bar in Skiathos”.

Overlooking Skiathos Town – The Windmill Restaurant

There are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from in Skiathos with many of them offering cosmopolitan menus that will be immediately familiar to travellers. As would be expected on an island, an extensive range of fresh fish dishes are available daily and are a particular speciality of many restaurants. Meat produce too is also sourced locally and many diners comment on an increased flavour to that experienced back home where, perhaps, the big supermarket chains  control food supply, and standardisation rules dominate.

Skiathos Town, being the island’s capital, is home to most of the restaurants and there are some truly  great places to choose from located both on the harbour front and in the quaint cobbled back streets. Many out-of-town visitors jump the bus service into town for the evening, have a look around the shops, and finish off with a meal and drink.

For those desiring a little more tranquility and wishing to stay out of town, there is no shortage of choice in the resort areas along the coast road.

Greek Tavernas

For the real food lover, it is really well worth seeking out one of the many authentic Greek tavernas serving local dishes. There are a number of such places in Skiathos Town, and also quite a few scattered around the island. These places are “hidden gems” with conventional wisdom being that the best way to order is from the “specials” menu which the proprietor is usually proud and happy to explain in great detail. An added bonus when visiting one of the tavernas located in the hills to the north of the southern coast road is the spectacular views of the neighbouring islands, especially at sundown.

It’s a cliche, but this really is a not-to-be-missed experience.

Local Wine

Greek wines are beginning to make a name for themselves. Visitors are invariably pleasantly surprised at the quality of local wines on offer. Imported wines are in comparison more expensive and local house wines in particular represent exceptional value.

Food To Go

There are many places in Skiathos where food can be purchased to take away. Thankfully, globalisation has left the island alone and the big food chains have never managed to get a foothold, so don’t expect to see any of those familiar logos advertising burgers, chicken, meal deals, and all manner of fast food horrors.

What you will see is a broad selection of independent shops selling pastries, sandwiches, ice cream, crepes, and other various snacks. This is the least expensive eating option, and it gets even cheaper in the back streets away from the waterfront.
