HANIA

HANIASKI.jpg (18404 bytes) Hania means "Inns" or "Hostels" and is on the saddle between the eastern and north eastern part of Pelion, and Volos and the western part. It was here that travellers & merchants traditionally rested overnight on their way back and forth. It was not possible in one day with a horse or mule to get over the mountain completely, so Hania became a hamlet with only hostelries in it.

Today, it is where people drive to get away from the cities, breathe some fresh air and sample the traditional mountain food of "spetsofai", bean stew, goat soup and spicy paprika goat cheese.

Hania is 1200 metres above sea level and surrounded by thick beech forests. In every hostel there will be a large, roaring fire, warming the guest with logs cut from the forest.

2 kilometres above Hania, at a height of 1470 mtres, is the ski centre of Agrolefkes. Here you will find a reasonably modern ski resort with wonderful views of the Pagassitokos Gulf on the left and over Zagora to the Aegean on the right.
