Volos is a large town of over 100,000 inhabitants. Above Volos are
the mountains of Pelion which are snow covered in the winter and lush and green in the
summer. Breezes from the mountains or the sea keep Volos reasonably pollution free. It is a cosmopolitan town with many cultural events throughout the year. It manages to avoid the hustle, bustle and pollution of Athens. Volos is the centre of commerce for the Pelion and Sporades Islands area. The shopping centre of Volos has been made entirely into walking precincts and you can find whatever you need there. |
| Volos has a large commercial port and is also the starting point
for most ferries and hydrofoils leaving for the island of Skiathos,
Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros. Quite
a large fishing fleet operates from Volos and fishes in the Pagassitikos Gulf as well as
further afield. |
