WINDSURFING IN SKYROS

jumpjib.jpg (8333 bytes) Skyros, being further out in the open Aegean than the rest of the Sporades Islands, is more exposed to the Meltemi which blows off and on  throughout July and August. It does not receive the same strength of wind as Paros and the rest of the Kyklades Islands, but nearly always has enough to keep the summer heat at a reasonable temperature.

However, Skyros has a "wind enhancer"!

The prevailing wind is accelerated through the valley which divides the northern and southern parts of the island by 2 to 3 beaufort!! The ideal place to catch this is the bay of Kalamitsa where the wind is often 5 to 6 beaufort or more. Kalamitsa Bay is semi-circular with roads on either side so that you can scud right across the bay from one launch point to another. Even if your equipment breaks, you should be able to get ashore fairly easily. There is no one renting out boards so there is no rescue boat and you will have to bring your own gear. However, if you want a comparatively unspoilt and crowd free holiday with the possibility of good windsurfing thrown in, Skyros is the place.
